Fall Trail Crew

The WODC is responsible for the maintenance of over 50 miles of hiking trails in the White Mountain National Forest. Most of our trails are within the Sandwich Range Wilderness area, and offer opportunities for solitude not available in more heavily used parts of the Forest. We are seeking applicants who appreciate this environment and will help us to protect it.

Although the WODC is primarily a volunteer organization, we currently have a backlog of trail work that requires the hiring of a summer trail crew. We are currently seeking applicants for the 1998 summer season. We plan to field two separate crews as detailed below. This is an unique opportunity to work with one of the oldest trail maintenance organizations in the White Mountains.

Crew Size 3 people 3 people
Crew season 6 weeks, June 6 - July 18 September  (moved from mid-summer)
Planned work Clean-up of ice storm damage including blow-down removal, brushing, and clearing drainage. Treadway reconstruction on Walden Trail, including rock steps, rock water bars, soil retainers, and cribbing.
Required skills:
Crew members (2)
Ability to work effectively and safely with basic hand tools. Prior trail work experience is desirable but not required. Some prior trail work experience is required, preferably including rock work.
Crew leader (1) Some prior trail work experience is required. Significant experience and ability with rock work and crew leadership is required.
Other requirements A commitment to low impact hiking and camping practices is essential.
Basic first aid skills and/or certification is required.
Work environment Work location will vary constantly, and will be anywhere from 1 to 4 miles from the trailhead. All work will be in a relatively fixed, remote location.
Overnight work trips Remote work may require camping out for two nights per week. Remote work site will require camping out for four nights per week.
Work hours 36-hours per week (four 9-hour days.) Paid time includes actual work and hiking to/from work site. 40-hours per week (four-and-a-half 9-hour days.) Paid time includes actual work and hiking to/from work site.
Work Week Wednesday through Saturday Wednesday through mid-day Sunday
Accommodations Crew members will be responsible for their own food and living arrangements. Local accommodation may be available. WODC will provide accommodations for off days as a job benefit.
Salary $7 to $8/hour, depending on experience. $8 to $10/hour, depending on experience.

You may apply for one or both crews depending on your interests and experience. We also expect to operate a longer program next year, and will invite successful crew members to return.
